Common reasons people fail their driving test
How to use DVSA’s current failure-reason guidance as a practical preparation tool.
Pre-launch check: Check the DVSA publication each month and record the source date when data is refreshed.
Turn the list into practice
Do not treat the list as a prediction of your test route. Ask your instructor to assess the underlying skills across different roads and conditions.
- Make effective observations before entering a new road.
- Use mirrors before changing direction, speed or position.
- Move off only after checking that it is safe.
- Choose safe road position and respond correctly to signs, lights and markings.
- Keep appropriate control, speed and clearance for the conditions.
Aim for consistency
A single successful manoeuvre in a lesson is less useful than making safe decisions repeatedly without prompts. Mock tests can show whether those skills hold together under normal pressure.
