What happens during a UK practical driving test?
The main stages of the car test, from the eyesight check to the result.
Pre-launch check: Check the DVSA publication each month and record the source date when data is refreshed.
Before and during the drive
You first read a number plate at the required distance. The examiner asks one ‘tell me’ safety question before driving and one ‘show me’ question while you drive.
The route includes different roads and traffic conditions, independent driving, pulling over and moving away. You may be asked to carry out an emergency stop, and you will complete one official reversing exercise.
Mistakes and the result
A mistake does not always mean the test is unsuccessful. Continue safely unless the examiner tells you to stop. At the end, the examiner gives the result and explains recorded faults.
