What happens after passing your driving test?
Your pass certificate, full licence and the insurance you need before driving alone.
Direct answer: The examiner tells you the result, gives you a pass certificate and can normally arrange for your full licence to be sent automatically. You may drive immediately only if you are properly insured to drive without supervision.
Pre-launch check: Check the DVSA publication each month and record the source date when data is refreshed.
Your licence
If you let the examiner keep your provisional licence, DVLA can usually process the full licence automatically. If you keep it or need to change details, follow the official application process within the stated time limit.
Keep the pass certificate safe while the licence is being processed.
Before driving alone
- Confirm that your insurance covers you as a full-licence holder driving without supervision.
- Check the vehicle is taxed, insured, roadworthy and has a valid MOT where required.
- Build experience gradually in unfamiliar roads, weather and traffic.
